Charming Red House for Dim Sum (7.6)

Jamie’s Italian has finally closed, as did around two dozens of its chain in its native England. Replacing it is Gaia’s Redhouse which is a chic new dim sum place that actually offers much more solid food and service than its superficially elegant and ornate décor might initially suggest. It’s also a rare opportunity to be able to enjoy a hefty 30% discount with 300% of the typical spaciousness during the Covid pandemic. No discount is applied to services, as staff are very welcoming and helpful, a great bonus that contrasts with typically irritated waiters and waitresses at many dim sum joints. Food looks and tastes amazing, arrives promptly and are priced fairly. Another restaurant to recommend.

Food Rundown

Silken Eggplant Tofu, $68 The tofu glides through your mouth like silk. Our favorite dish with a refreshingly sweet and citrusy sauce.

Rose Gold Prawn Dumplings, $52 / Yin Yang Sponge Cake, $42 Both dishes are very pretty and they taste great.

Chilled Abalone, $128 Fresh with a silky and chewy texture. A decent appetizer, but not a must-order.

Baked Kurobuta Pork with Pineapple Buns, $42 Excellent with a super fluffy and light skin. The char siu is tender and rich. A signature.

Kung Pao Chicken, $138 This comes with cashew nuts. The chicken is tender and the sauce superb—not much oil yet still flavorful.

Crispy Bombay Duck Fish, $88 Chinese-style, bitesize , deep-fried fish fillet. Super crisp, savory and full of a peppery aroma. Perfect.

Sichuan-style Angus Beef Cubes, $118 This was the only dish that was a disappointment, as the Angus was so tough and dry that it was hard to chew. There’s an expensive version of the same dish with Wagyu that is their signature, and I assume that would be a safer bet.

Smoked Eggs with Caviar, $58 Nicely chilled, but the eggs could be a bit more savory and sweet.

Bao Bao with BBQ Pork, $42 This took us by surprise as it was a completely western interpretation of a Chinese bao. Two white buns sandwich three pieces of bbq pork with greens and even a slice of tomato. It was okay.

Braised Pea Shoots in Supreme Broth, $108 Pea shoots were super fresh and the broth was very tasty.
